Your connection to O gauge

Trains, layouts & realistic scenery

Practical O gauge guides, layout ideas, and real-rock ballast recommendations organized by railroad, color, and scene type.

Start your next project

Build an O gauge railroad that looks connected to a real place.

O gauge is large enough for stone size, color shifts, tie weathering, and trackside details to be noticed. Plan the railroad first, then select scenery that supports its era and territory.

Why real rock works

Texture matters more in O scale.

From normal viewing distance, O gauge modelers can see individual particles, uneven shoulders, dirt between tracks, and changes from main line to yard. Real mineral material gives natural variation without looking painted or uniform.

  • Use a cleaner gray blend for maintained main lines.
  • Use darker mixed material for yards and industrial spurs.
  • Use regional colors to establish geography.
  • Blend powder and dirt along the edges.
